Fresh Details on the Current Florida Keys Bite with Captain Jonathan Porter
Florida Keys - Monroe, FL
Current Conditions and Overview The May bite in Islamorada is officially in full swing. With the transition into warmer weather, the local waters are incredibly productive, offering a mix of steady reef action and high-energy backcountry opportunities. As a lifelong local, I’ve been watching the tides closely, and the water clarity around the Upper Keys has been excellent for both sight fishing and bottom bouncing.
The Reef: Yellowtail and Snapper Success The reef fishing has remained the most consistent part of our recent trips. We have successfully limited out on Yellowtail Snapper on several outings lately. The Mangrove Snapper are also active, holding tight to structure.
Target Depth: 30–60 feet.
Technique: We’ve had the most success using light tackle with plenty of chum to get the yellowtails up in the water column.
Pro Tip: High-quality fluorocarbon leaders are making a huge difference right now, as the fish are a bit line-shy in the clear water.
Backcountry and Inshore Report In the backcountry, the Snook and Redfish are moving through the mangroves and onto the flats. We are seeing a lot of activity during the early morning incoming tides.
Tarpon Season: The Silver King has arrived. We are starting to see significant numbers of Tarpon moving through the passes. It is an ideal time for those looking to test their strength against one of the most iconic species in the Florida Keys.
Lures/Bait: Live shrimp and small pinfish have been the go-to choices for the inshore species.
Family and Kid-Friendly Action Our kid-friendly fishing charters have been seeing plenty of action with smaller snapper and jacks. These trips are great for keeping the rods bent and the kids engaged. The calm inshore waters provide a comfortable environment for everyone on board the 17' Hoog.
What’s Next? As we head further into the month, expect the Tarpon migration to peak and the reef bite to stay strong. If you’re looking to get away from the docks and enjoy the scenery, the Islamorada sandbar is also at its best right now with crystal-clear, shallow water.
Captain's Note: Whether you’re a seasoned angler or taking the family out for their first catch, the conditions right now are hard to beat. We provide everything you need—from the license to the gear—so you can just focus on the water.
